Kathleen Chapin Obituary
Williamsport, Tennessee - Kathleen Therese Mitter Chapin, known for her love of quilting, gardening, baking, the outdoors, and family and friends, died June 4, 2026, in Maury County.
Kathy was born July 19, 1959, in Garden City, Mich., to Ralph and Mary Mitter. She grew up in Detroit and graduated from Eastern Michigan University, going on to become a teacher and, after moving to Middle Tennessee, began a career with the U.S. Postal Service.
She was preceded in death by her mother, who passed away in 2025, and her brothers Jimmy and Brian.
Survivors include her husband of 43 years, Paul Chapin of Williamsport in Hickman County; sons Jack William Chapin (Brooke) and Nicholas Paul Chapin (Jessica); a brother, Mike Mitter (Paula); three grandchildren, Sloane, Hunter and Lucas Chapin; and her father, Ralph Mitter.
Kathy and Paul lived in Chelsea, Mich., where he worked for General Motors and she was a substitute teacher and full-time mom. In 1993, Paul transferred to the GM Saturn plant in Spring Hill and Kathy followed two months later with their young sons. After living in Spring Hill, Kathy and Paul settled in Williamsport, which they called home for more than three decades.
She taught as a public school substitute teacher in Spring Hill and Centerville before beginning her career with the postal service, first as a carrier and then working in the Centerville, Santa Fe, Duck River and Williamsport post offices. Kathy retired as the Postmaster in the Nunnelly Post Office in 2019.
Kathy's first love was her family. Known affectionately as GiGi to her three grandchildren, Kathy enjoyed spending time fishing with Paul and retreating to the outdoors where she loved gardening and shared homegrown vegetables with neighbors and family.
Kathy brought a special sense of peace and love to any room she entered. She was an expert quiltmaker, often making quilts for the newborn babies of relatives and friends in Michigan and across Hickman and Maury counties.
Visitation will be held on June 13, 2026, from 2-4 p.m. with a Celebration of Life to follow from 4-5 p.m. at McDonald Funeral Home, 102 West End Ave, Centerville, TN.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests considering a donation to the Hickman County Humane Society, P.O. Box 183, Centerville, TN 37033.
